The final education workshops for teachers and students in the Imperial and Coachella Valleys were held on April 9th and 10th. Tom Kirk, executive director of the Salton Sea Authority, spoke to participants about the future of the Sea.

Carol Franklin from the University of Redlands has designed a pilot program using GIS technology and information about the Sea to develop a web- and standards-based curriculum for use in the classroom. Participants have used a digital atlas created by the Redlands Institute, the data repository for information about the Sea.

Approximately 40 teachers and students have attended a series of 6 workshops, took a field trip to the Sea, and are now completing projects that will use the Salton Sea in their classrooms. Projects will be featured at the next Salton Sea Symposium. 

In addition to considering the future of the Sea, participants have learned about the Sea's physical setting, water and air quality, changing ecosystems, and bird habitat. They have worked in teacher/student teams to answer questions about the Sea using GIS (Geographical Information Systems) technology.
