Press Release

April 24, 2000

The media is invited to join congressional staff members to observe demonstration of a proposed enhanced evaporation system under review by the Salton Sea Authority and Bureau of Reclamation as one of the alternatives for reducing salinity at the Salton Sea.

The demonstration will take place Thursday, April 26 at the former Salton Sea Navy Base, located South of Salton City off of Highway 86.

Staff members from Congressman Duncan Hunter's office as well as members of the House Appropriations Committee staff will be on hand.

This will be the second test of the Enhanced Evaporation System. Plans are to continue this test for several weeks to evaluate environmental issues such as drift as well as the effectiveness of the ground-based equipment over a longer period of time.

The initial test was conducted in early March.

The turnoff to the former Navy Base is located about 5.5 miles south of Salton City’s southern-most turnoff (near the airport and landfill) and 5 miles north of the Border Patrol inspection station. The road is difficult to see from the highway.

The Navy has prohibited access to the general public but is permitting the media and government officials visit the site for the purpose of witnessing the demonstrations.
