Press Release

Feb. 28, 2000

The Salton Sea Authority and the Bureau of Reclamation will be conducting a demonstration of the ground-based enhanced evaporation system from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 1 and Thursday, March 2.

The media is invited to view the Wednesday demonstration. Authority Board Members and Technical Advisory Committee members also will be present that day.

The location of the test will be the former Salton Sea Navy Test Base, located south of Salton City off of Highway 86. The Navy has prohibited access to the general public but is permitting the media and government officials visit the site for the purpose of witnessing the demonstrations.

The turnoff to the former Navy Base is located about 5.5 miles south of Salton City’s southern-most turnoff (near the airport and landfill) and 5 miles north of the Border Patrol inspection station.

The system under review as one of the alternatives to reduce the salinity of the Salton Sea. The test is being conducted in an effort to improve our ability to design and construct the pilot enhanced evaporation system that is scheduled to occur later this year.
