Salton Sea Authority Media Advisory

Jan. 7, 2003

Tom Kirk, Executive Director of the Salton Sea Authority, today issued the following statement in reaction to legislation announced today limiting the Imperial Irrigation District's ability to receive Colorado River water.

BEGIN STATEMENT: "Today State Senators Machado and Kuehl announced major water legislation designed to limit the Imperial Irrigation District's (IID's) ability to receive Colorado River water to 2.6 million acre-feet per year.  The legislation comes on the heels of the Southern California water districts'
inability to cement a deal to conserve and transfer water by the end of 2002.

The central stumbling block to the water transfer deal has been the impacts on the Salton Sea.  The press release issued by the State Senators fails to acknowledge the Salton Sea.  The legislation appears to be designed to punish IID.  Unfortunately, it might end up punishing the Salton Sea.

There has been a much talk about reducing "collateral damage" with precision munitions and smart bombs.  This legislative bomb may be anything but smart or precise."
