Other Recreation at the Sea

OFF ROAD VEHICLES: Ocotillo Wells State Vehicular Recreation Area is a 14,000 acre off-road vehicle park, which is an hour’s drive away on the west side of the Salton Sea (760-767-5391).   The world famous Algondones Dunes are located east of the Salton Sea.

HIKING: Miles of shoreline and nearby hills make exploration on foot an exciting experience around the Salton Sea.  Shells, garnet, petrified palm, and other collectible materials can be found.  There are dozens of hiking trails near Salton City and nearby Dos Palmas area.

The State Recreation Area has a self-guided nature trail that joins the Headquarters area to the Mecca Beach Campground.  It is approximately 1 mile long.  Free Nature Trail Guides are available at the Visitors' Center or the Headquarters entrance station.

KAYAKING: There are kayak trails at the Salton Sea at the State Recreation Area.

PONTOON BOAT TOUR: During the season, rangers offer guided tours in the park’s interpretive boat to view the birds that reside in, or migrate to, the Salton Sea.

PHOTOGRAPHY: The Salton Sea offers a beautiful backdrop for photographic opportunities.  The reflections off the water, the frequent misty conditions over the Sea, the blue water in a desert setting, the mountains rising above the desert floor and the abundance of birds all provide excellent subject matter for photographers.

HOT MINERAL SPAS: Hot mineral spas are located 2 miles south of Bombay Beach on Spa Road.  The facilities are developed around natural hot mineral pools.
